At the beginning of the month Stirfry decided to sit some eggs. I let her do so and she started May with 7 eggs, then the next morning her sneaky coop mates dropped some into the nest bringing the total up to 13 eggs. The first week she still had 13 eggs, then she culled out a bunch over the second and third week and ended up bringing 7 eggs to term. May 21, I happen to be out of town and got a call from Dad saying "Hey you have 4 chicks." I was like WHOOOO. She sat the other 3 eggs and Friday 1 more hatched. She gave up on the last 2 eggs Saturday. Unfortunately Saturday was a bad day for the chicks, 3 died leaving me with a yellow and a brown. Today the yellow was trampled and the brown is still fighting to survive.
May 10 was my first batch of chickens' hatchday. They were all hatched and mailed to arrive on May 10. YAY 1 year old chickens. Unfortunately though my Cochin Rooster died and did not see his 1 year birthday. I just found him with his head dangling off his favorite roosting point one morning. Poor guy. Now I dont have any more "big brown cock" jokes. On the upside, I am fairly sure that the brown baby is his. It is fluffy and brown and has puffed out Araucana cheeks. I am looking forward to seeing it grow. If it makes it *knocks on wood*
